Why Learn Online?

We live in a time where work-life balance is disappearing. Everyone is extremely busy, and that impacts our ability to do the things that matter.

Learning online bridges that gap. Don’t worry about travelling to your local music school - let it come to you. All you need is a piano or keyboard (not necessary for theory lessons), some decent Wifi, and a phone, laptop or tablet with a camera.

Online lessons are also superior to apps or subscriptions. Get live, human feedback and direction for the elements an app can’t assess: technique, posture, tone, voicing and efficiency (all the things that make music what it is!)

In terms of value, you’ll see:

  • Real-time correction

You get immediate feedback on posture, hand shape, tension, rhythm, and sound — before bad habits bed in.

  • Faster progress per minute

A good teacher spots the 1–2 things that will unlock a piece, instead of you guessing for weeks.

  • Accountability that actually works

Regular check-ins keep practice consistent, even when life is busy.

  • A plan tailored to you

Repertoire, technique, and theory chosen around your goals, level, time, and learning style - not a one-size course.

  • Confidence-building guidance

You’re supported through tricky passages, performance nerves, and “I’m stuck” moments.

  • Better techniques, and fewer injuries

Live oversight helps prevent tension and overuse issues from inefficient playing.

  • Two-way interaction

You can ask questions as you hit the problem, not after the moment has passed.

  • Musicianship, not just notes

Phrasing, voicing, pedalling, articulation, tone — the stuff apps can’t truly coach.

  • Efficient practice habits

You learn how to practice so the time you spend actually translates into improvement.

  • Structure & flexibility

A clear direction, but lessons adapt week to week depending on how things went.

  • It works anywhere

No commuting, no weather stress - and you can still get high-quality teaching.

  • Support beyond the lesson

We provide notes, goals, and resources so you know exactly what to do between sessions.

Who are lessons for?

Our online lessons are for anyone who wants to learn! We take students from ages 9+ from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. We most commonly see:

Adult beginners

This is, by far, our largest group of students! There are a lot of myths around how you can’t take up hobbies as an adult - they are rubbish. If you really want to learn, whatever your reason, you should go for it!

ABRSM/Trinity music theory exam students

We often help with preparations for music theory exams. A few times a year, we also host group ‘crash courses’ in grade 5 ABRSM theory.

People returning to the piano

We’ve seen students who’ve taken breaks from the piano of 6 months, and we’ve seen students who’ve taken breaks of 20 years! It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been away - we can offer you the direction you need.

FAQs

Do I need a piano?

1

For music theory - it helps, but it’s not an essential item.

For piano lessons - yes. Don’t worry - you can find cheap or free pianos or weighted keyboards from places like Facebook marketplace and Gumtree.

I’m a complete beginner: is it OK to do online lessons?

2

Yes, absolutely! Online lessons aren’t perfect, but in-person lessons aren’t either. The format matters only in the context of what is easiest and most convenient for you.

What makes you different?

3

Red Squirrel Music is about increasing the accessibility of piano and music theory lessons for those with busy schedules. We provide the human touch that self-teaching apps simply can’t compete with, and offer expert teaching from the comfort of your home.

What if I can’t practice much?

4

Part of our teaching includes helping you to practice effectively. This includes working around your schedule. If you can dedicate only 15 minutes of practice a day, we can still make sure you make good progress.
